PRODUCTS FOR HEAT TREATMENTS TO METALS

Heat treatment refers to the heating thermal
cycle performed in predetermined conditions
and temperatures, followed by cooling processes,
more or less slow, with the aim to give a metal
or a metal alloy those crystal structures that
give it certain mechanical and/or technological
features.
To understand the effect of heat treatments on a
metal alloy structure, it is necessary to know the
state diagram of the alloy itself. However, such
knowledge is not sufficient, in fact the state diagrams
define the equilibrium structure of a metal
or of an alloy at a given temperature. The corresponding
curves are then derived by applying
heating and cooling processes very slowly (such
as to allow equilibration at each temperature).
For this reason, an important role is played by the
cooling or heating rate of the transformation. This
speed not only affects the transition temperatures
(which typically will be different from those
obtained by state diagrams), but also on the very
nature of the structure obtained, with the possibility
of obtaining metastable constituents (such
as the martensite in steels), which are absent in
state diagrams.
